Tips for Online Learning at Home during “PPKM Darurat”

Online learning or “distance learning” (PJJ) is back in session after the government postponed “Sekolah Tatap Muka” due to emergency public activity restrictions (PPKM Darurat) in 15 cities and regencies outside of Java and Bali as the country battles the “second wave” of coronavirus infections, driven primarily by the more transmissible Delta variant.

Not all online learning runs smoothly on account of a few common obstacles. That has negative impacts on students such as learning loss or a decrease in student learning competence.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make online learning work for you. Do you already practice some of these tips?
Set a schedule

Even if you are studying from home (or especially!) make sure you keep a good schedule. For example, have a set time to get up, grab some breakfast, perhaps even exercise before getting dressed to start your online learning. Routines can signal to the brain that it is time to get the job done. Create a Study Area

Having a comfortable learning area is crucial when learning at home. Create a boundary between work areas and recreational ones in order to stay focused when you are learning and to relax and relieve stress when you step out of your study area.

Take Notes Taking notes during online classes can really help you focus on the content of your learning. It’s also a good way to keep your hands busy and off that cellphone! Get physical

Studying from home makes physical activity almost redundant. Make it a habit to limit the amount of time you stay seated to get up and move, whether it is every 45 minutes or shorter. You can stretch, walk around the room, or better yet, give your eyes a break from staring at the screen and get an eyeful by looking out the window.

Stay sociable

Take breaks from studying by making time for your social life. By that, we don’t mean scrolling down Instagram and Facebook walls. Try making phone calls or video calls with friends and family to feel more emotionally connected.

Create a Study Plan

Plan out your work three days in advance so that you know what’s ahead., Once you have an idea of the work due, you can start by doing the smaller tasks first. Then, break up bigger tasks into smaller chunks that you can work on in stages. Set daily deadlines for getting those smaller tasks done. You can get a classmate onboard to study or work on those tasks with you online to make it more fun.

Eat and Sleep Well

The most important thing for learning – whether online or face-to-face – to remain effective and enjoyable is to ensure you are eating healthy and getting enough sleep. It may be tempting to reach for junk food and comfort food in these times but it will start showing in your waistline. Substitute those snacks for wholemeal crackers, fruit, nuts, and yogurt. Instead of staying up late, get to bed before midnight and sleep for 7-8 hours.

Avoid Multitasking

The last online learning tip is to avoid multitasking or doing many things concurrently. Your brain works best when it is focused intently on a single task. Close inactive windows and tabs so that you are not tempted to switch tabs to a video, game, or other homework. Phones are the greatest distractions and will steal hours of your life, keeping you away from getting ahead in your learning and relationships. Do one thing at a time and schedule in time for different tasks, including checking your phone messages and social media.
