The International Baccalaureate at SMN

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is SMN’s flagship curriculum, taking place during Grades 11 and 12. Success at the IBDP level will ensure that SMN alumni have access to the best universities around the world, and can proudly represent SMN and Indonesia on the world stage.

For the previous two examination sessions, taking place in May 2020 and May 2021, the running of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, as with all other curricula, however students and teachers alike at SMN have adapted to these pressures quickly and responsibly. Without the ability to hold examinations at school, or meet face to face, innovative mechanisms of remote oversight and teaching have had to be put in place, making optimum use of the technology available whilst not ignoring the importance of close coordination and guidance from the IBDP teachers.

We are dedicated to ensuring that, no matter what circumstances, SMN students are able to achieve their best outcome in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, so it was a happy moment when we received our May 2021 batch results and they were the highest in SMN’s history as an IB school!

To receive the diploma from International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, students must study 6 subjects across a range of subject groups, taking two languages, mathematics, a social science, a natural science and an optional subject, in addition to performing an extended essay in a subject of their choice, theory of knowledge (which examines where our knowledge comes from in each subject area and how we know what we claim to know) and a range of extracurricular activities known as CAS (creativity, activity, service). This is a demanding program that requires students to be well-rounded, confident and naturally curious, actively engaging with their areas of interest prior to being independent learners at university level.

The total possible score is calculated out of 45, and our May 2021 batch achieved a record average score of 36.4, far outperforming the world average (33.0). This represents an increase of 20% on the average score of our May 2019 batch, and an increase of 14% on the average score of our May 2020 batch! International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme graduates from the previous two years have been able to pursue their studies at universities from the USA, the Netherlands, Australia, Singapore and Japan. We have to congratulate the hard work and flexibility of our SMN students in adapting to the difficult circumstances surrounding the pandemic, as well as our dependable staff at SMN who are committed to ensuring the students reach their full potential at high school and beyond.

Congrats SMN alumni!
